Toby’s Place Updates
Lots of exciting things happening at Toby's Place!
So hard to believe Toby's Place has been up and running for months now! If you haven't checked us out in a while, we encourage you to follow this ministry:
2nd Annual Comedy Night May 26, 2018
Our 2nd Annual Comedy Night Benefit is expected to keep the laughs rolling for a great cause. This year's event will take place on site at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church - 33 East Road Scarborough, so you can see where Toby's Place happens and where your funding goes. Remember 100% of what we raise goes to the programming of Toby's Place. We are proud to announce this year will be again hosted by Maggie Cassella and produced by our own Music Director, Randy Vancourt.
Whether you were at the show last year or not, and you are thinking about coming to The Comedy NIght this year because it is in South Scarborough (Warden and Kingston Road area), be reminded that last year's inaugural event was ideally hosted at The 519 which serves the downtown LGBTQ2+ community and yet how far it is for youth to get services, if not for Toby's Place.

Moderator Visit May 1, 2017
The Moderator came to town! And she spent the evening at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church. Jordan Cantwell, the Moderator of the United Church of Canada, visited Toronto on May 1st and 2nd. Our presbytery decided that the most interesting, exciting place to bring the moderator would be right here to Birchcliff Bluffs United Church. On Monday, May 1st, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m., we will come together to celebrate our congregation’s work on getting Toby’s Place off the ground. Along with Music, Food and Art, Jordan spoke about how folks like you have, despite obstacles and challenges, “Nevertheless, Persisted” in order to bring positive change to the world. Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo offered a brief memorial to Toby Dancer, the woman after whom our LGBTQ safe-space drop-in has been named. Thank you to all who came from BBUC and the Community, at large.
Comedy Night February 10, 2017
Our Comedy Night Benefit which took place on February 10, was an amazing success. Despite a snow storm that virtually shut down the city, we were filled to capacity in the Ball Room in the 519 Community Centre. The stellar cast created an evening of joyous (and sometimes raucous) laughter that no one who attended will forget. We are so pleased to announce that we raised over $18,000.00 for Toby’s Place. We are already in the planning stages for next year’s fundraiser!
As many of you know, at the end of 2016, Toby’s Place was the recipient of a $25,000.00 grant from the Embracing the Spirit Fund operated by the Edge Network, a United Church initiative. We have recently been advised that we are an excellent candidate for the New Ministries Fund also operated by Edge. In early April we will be applying for a three year grant in the amount of $25,000.00 per year (2017, 2018 & 2019). This cornerstone funding ensures a solid start to a program that we know will last for many years to come.
We are also very grateful and excited to announce that Toby’s Place will be the recipient of funds raised by the We’re Funny That Way Festival. We’re Funny That Way is a national fundraising organization whose goal is to raise funds to support queer organizations across Canada. Specifically, the We’re Funny That Way™ Foundation aims to donate funds to organizations that will be highly impacted by their receipt.
We have been making great strides in planning for the opening of Toby’s Place. We have incredible volunteers who will be helping with meals, informal activities (such as homework and resume help) and the formal education piece each week. We continue to look for folks who would like to get involved with Toby’s Place. Whatever your gifts, experience, skills or passion – we have a place for you!
As always, thank you for all your support for this much-needed program. It is distressing to know that in 2017 there are almost no services or safe places for queer youth in Scarborough. But your response to this call to transform our community has been exhilarating and inspiring. Thank you for being a part of changing the world!
